INTRODUCTION:  The Wildlife Mitigation Program (WMP) of the Spokane Tribe manages 8,407 acres of mitigation lands secured for the Tribe by Bonneville Power Administration to mitigate the impacts of Grand Coulee Dam. The Habitat Biologist position is a full-time, permanent position located in Wellpinit, Washington and is responsible for habitat management activities on Wildlife Mitigation Areas (WMA) with the goal of ensuring sustainable wildlife and fish populations and their supporting habitats. Specific objectives are listed below.

 MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position will be responsible for managing the weed control operations of the Wildlife Mitigation program on ~11,000 acres of Mitigation properties.
  • Conducts wildlife operations & maintenance activities on wildlife mitigation lands such as noxious weed control, forest thinning, cover crop seeding, prescribed burning, access road maintenance, and maintenance of equipment and Tribal facilities.
  • Prepare equipment for storage in the off season and for use in the next field season
  • Conducts wildlife habitat enhancements such as tree and shrub planting, and native grass seeding.
  • Develops plans with methodology describing management protocols, records and analyzes data, writes reports summarizing results, and presents findings to technical and general audiences.
  • Supervises and trains WMP technicians (currently 5); ensures projects are completed and that data collected are accurate.
  • Maintains databases with records of spray activities, monitoring studies, and equipment maintenance and inventory.
  • Collect and log GIS data into our systems
  • The incumbent is expected to be punctual, self-motivated, and exercise sound judgement (safety-oriented) in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.
  • Provides habitat management recommendations to the WMP Manager.
  • Serves as part of an Interdisciplinary Team to review residential or commercial development projects to ensure that fish, wildlife, and habitat protection regulations (e.g., NEPA, ESA, etc.) are implemented.
  • Administrative duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:

  • Ability to work in the field in all weather conditions and able to complete arduous tasks (lift 50 pounds; walk 5 miles) over rugged terrain.
  • Ability and knowledge to work safely and efficiently around agricultural and spraying equipment, ATVs, and chainsaws.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, non-verbal, and written communication with diverse groups of stakeholders.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in wildlife habitat restoration techniques, planning, and implementation.
  • Ability to manage GIS databases, conduct spatial analyses, and make maps.
  • Past experience effectively supervising a crew.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively, and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledgeable of the identification and life cycle characteristics of plants and wildlife on the Spokane Reservation.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Management/Ecology, Natural Resource Science, Environmental Science, or closely related field AND 12 months of professional experience related to wildlife population or habitat management, invasive species control, or closely related field.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s License or ability to obtain one; must be tribally insurable.
  • Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Pesticide Private Applicators License required within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to work variable hours, long days, early mornings, nights, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates. The normal schedule is Monday – Thursday from 06:30 – 5:00.
