Archives and Collections

Welcome to Archives and Collections! The Preservation Program maintains a federally certified repository, which houses Spokane tribal artifacts (both pre-contact and historic), and archival and library materials in a climate-controlled environment with 24-hour security and surveillance. Our primary objective is to protect and preserve these materials, which illustrate the vital legacy of the Spokane Tribe for both the Indian and non-Indian communities.

Another of our objectives is to teach others about the rich heritage of the Spokane people. Through our public education and outreach, tribal representatives engage groups in surrounding communities with presentations that include historic photographs, traditional stories, and material culture (artifacts). These presentations can vary from a brief overview to an in-depth history of the Spokane Tribe, as well as the detrimental effects of damaging, stealing, and/or selling cultural resources. Our collections are also available to qualified researchers once research clearance has been granted through the Tribal Business Council and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer.

To request access to the Spokane Tribe Preservation Program Archives and Collections please contact the Archives and Collections Manager, Zenna Crawford (zenna.crawford@spokanetribe.com), for the “Request for Collections Access and Collections Use Agreement” form.

PLATEAU PEOPLES’ WEB PORTAL

As an additional resource, we’ve partnered with Washington State University’s Plateau People’s Portal to make artifacts and archives available to you digitally. This is an on-going project and we will continue to upload content. Click on the following link to visit the portal: Plateau Peoples’ Portal

The Spokane Tribe of Indians vision is to achieve true sovereignty by attaining self-sufficiency. We will preserve and enhance our traditional values by living and teaching the inherent principles of respect, honor and integrity as embodied in our language and life-ways. We will develop strong leadership through education, accountability, experience and positive reinforcement.
