TITLE: TEACHER ASSISTANTS (2 POSITIONS)

STATUS: REGULAR, FULL-TIME, NON-EXEMPT
RATE OF PAY: $13.50 – $16.11/PER HOUR (DOE, DOQ)

INTRODUCTION: The Spokane Tribe of Indians Tribal TANF Program promotes and supports Tribal children and their families reaching their full potential of becoming healthy, productive and self-sufficient. This is done is in a way that protects and benefits the Tribal children, respects and preserves their culture, values and traditions, gives families access as well as input into the full range of programs and services to promote their self-esteem, independence, self-sufficiency and their educational experiences.
The Spokane Tribal TANF Children’s Center provides a safe and developmentally appropriate environment for young children. We value, accept and welcome all children and families. The primary emphasis of the program is to provide Early Childhood learning in a positive, educational setting.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work as part of team, contribute to the development of positive communication, mutual respect, mutual support, competence and creativity among all member of the Children’s Center Staff
- Provide support with what is needed in the classroom, under the direction of the lead teacher.
- Plan and help implement activities in accordance with developmentally appropriate practice and program philosophy.
- Assist in all classrooms, including infant, toddler, and preschool.
- Attend to children’s basic needs by feeding them, dressing them, and changing their diapers.
- Provide a safe environment to prevent and reduce injuries of the children; observe and monitor children’s play activities.
- Maintain daily documentation and record keeping in the classroom.
- Engage the children in appropriate language development through conversation and vocalization.
- Support the children’s positive self-image through appropriate conversations and positive guidance techniques including negotiating skills; utilizing positive guidance techniques and recommending or initiating other measures to control behavior in accordance with program policies.
- Organize and store toys and materials to ensure order in activity areas; maintain classroom upkeep and sanitization on a regular basis.
- Collaborate with parents and other staff members in providing education to the children including working with parents.
- Attend staff meetings and designated training programs.
- Assist in meal prep when needed.
- Follow all WA State Foundational Quality Standards.
- Performs all work related duties as required, and assist with other duties in the Children’s Center as assigned by the Program Manager.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION:
- Knowledge of early childhood development and child development stages. (Birth to 8 years)
- Knowledge of Native American culture, traditions, and language.
- Knowledge in working with low-income children and families.
- Knowledge of program requirements for early childhood/child care services.
- Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
- Skill in managing your own time.
- Ability to establish positive communication among parents, co-workers, Tribal staff, public and private agencies in serving the customers.
- Ability to make independent conclusions and decisions.
- Ability to handle conflict, complaints and disputes.
- Ability to practice tact, courtesy and discretion.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Ability to lift and maneuver children 6 wks to 6 years of age on an ongoing basis, who may weigh 50 pounds or more and the necessary physical dexterity to work with small children.
- Must be eighteen years of age or older and must have High school diploma or GED
- Washington State Short State ECED Certificate of Specialization or equivalent; or in an alternate field of study as approved by the Children’s Center Manager and Child Development Director.
OR willingness to obtain within two years of hire is required. *Must sign and agree to a Higher Education agreement upon hire.
- Ability and willingness to maintain absolute confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Ability to complete 30 hour STARS training within six months of hire.
- Previous experience working with Native American clientele and understanding of their cultural needs.
- Ability to obtain the following certificates and licenses with the specified time frame: Blood Borne Pathogens (1 month), First Aid and CPR Certification infant & child (2 months)
- Successful clearance of Criminal History and Background inquiry
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License and Tribally Insurable
- Completion of TB test prior to employment
- Show proof of MMR immunity
- Two years (2) experience working with children 6 weeks – 6 years in a group setting is preferred.
- Must complete 10 hours of STARS training annually.
- Must re-certify Food Handlers Permit, and infant & child First Aid and CPR before expiration.
- Blood Bourne Pathogens training required yearly
