INTRODUCTION:

The goal of the Tribal Language/Culture program is to revitalize the language, culture and history of the Spokane Tribe. Our main goal is to ensure that the language and culture are being passed down from generation to generation. Language Teacher Trainee will learn the Spokane Language and assist the efforts to revitalize the Spokane Language and Culture. 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn the Spokane Language /Culture in the Oral and written form                  
  • Learn the language/ to teach in K-12, and if needed Adult language classes
  • Working with students Pre-K to adults as well as Tribal Elders              
  • Assist in Curriculum Development
  • After completion of Training the Trainee will be required to teach in the classroom(s) as assigned
  • After completion of Training the Trainee will commit to 3 years of teaching in the classroom(s)

 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:           

  • Complete a Course in Issues in Child Abuse and Neglect                                              
  • Course in classroom management and other training as required
  • Learn the Spokane Salish Language with the goal of becoming fluent
  • Language Training using materials provided

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years & older
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must work towards fluency in the Spokane Language, including speaking, reading, analyzing and interpreting.
  • Complete Classroom Management training, and other trainings as required
  • Apply for Tribal and First Peoples Language, Culture and Oral Traditions (state) Certificate (required)
  • State and Federal Background clearance is required

OTHER:

  • Training in Pre-K and Elementary is preferred
  • Preference given to those who are positive role models
