INTRODUCTION:

The Fisheries Technician I position involves tasks related primarily to the Lake Roosevelt White Sturgeon Recovery Project.  Program goals are to assess wild and hatchery fish populations, environmental impacts from hydro-operations and analyzing data to predict fishery responses to management actions.  The position will be responsible for assisting the Project Biologists and Manager with research and recovery actions, monitoring activities (including, but not limited to: reservoir-wide creel survey, fyke net, seine sampling, electrofishing, set-lining, gill-netting, larval collections, water quality monitoring, marking activities, and telemetry), data management and analyses, report and journal writing, and equipment care and maintenance.  Additional activities include assisting with other fisheries program activities, including but not limited to; predator and aquatic community sampling and sample analyses, fisheries surveys, and assisting Program Biologists and Manager with the development of recommendations for reservoir and fisheries management operations.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist Fisheries Biologist and Program Manager with adult stock assessment surveys using setlines.
  • Assist Fisheries Biologist and Program Manager with collection of laboratory and field data.
  • Assist Fisheries Biologist and Program Manager with input of all fisheries data (including, but is not limited to, diet, aging, FWIN, trapping, and general monitoring data).
  • Assist Fisheries Biologist with gear preparation and maintenance.
  • Assist Fisheries Biologist and Program Manager in the development and implementation of larval and juvenile white sturgeon collections.
  • Assist Fisheries Biologist with organization and maintenance of fisheries shop and storage.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in data management
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and work effectively with co-workers, project partners, co-managers, and public outreach organizations.
  • Ability to work effectively in supervised and non-supervised settings.
  • This position requires ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in variable weather conditions, including inclement weather.
  • This position requires significant amounts of work to be performed outside general business hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Good employment history with references.
  • Boating experience, demonstrated training in boating safety, with particular emphasis on swift water boating experience and safety training preferred.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A valid Washington Driver’s License (or ability to attain one), and must be eligible for the Tribe’s vehicle insurance.
  • Must have (or ability to attain) a Washington Boater Education Card.
  • High school diploma or GED required (natural science courses preferable), B.S. Preferred
  • Demonstrated good employment history
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in supervised and non-supervised settings.
  • This position requires ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in variable weather conditions, including inclement weather.
  • Good employment history with references.
  • Boating experience, demonstrated training in boating safety, with particular emphasis on swift water boating experience and safety training preferred.
