NTRODUCTION:

This position is located on the Spokane Indian Reservation within the Fire Management organization.  The purpose of the position is to serve as a Wildland Firefighter/Forestry/Fuels Technician within the Forestry program. This position is primarily a wildland firefighter performing fire suppression/management/control on an engine, hand crew or helitack module during critical months of June thru September.  Incumbent is also required to assist in prescribed burning operations and fuels treatments in a wildland urban interface and hazardous fuels setting. Other duties include: thinning, slashing and chipping, traversing with GPS tools, assisting with stocking surveys and gathering stand exam data.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Major duties will be serving as a member of a fire crew assigned to suppress the full range of wildland fires. Perform assignments at the trainee firefighter level to develop a working knowledge of fire suppression and fuels management techniques and practices.  This consists of fireline construction, use of pumps and engines, hose lays using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments in the effective use of water and additives, working in and around aircraft such as helicopters, and understanding safety rules, basic fire behavior and fire and fuels terminology.

  • Searches out and extinguishes burning materials by moving dirt, applying water by hose or backpack pump, etc.
  • Chops brush, fells small trees and moves dirt to construct fireline using various hand tools such as axes, shovels, pulaskis, McLeods and/or power tools including chainsaws and portable pumps to control spread of wildland fire and/or to prepare control lines prior to burning.
  • Patrols firelines to locate and extinguish sparks, flare-ups and hotspot fires that may threaten developed firelines.
  • Cleans, reconditions and stores fire tools and equipment.
  • May assist other trained personnel in more specialized assignments such as backfire and burnout, mobile and stationary engine attack, mop up, construction of helispots, helitack operations and performing hover hookups.
  • Participates in fire and safety training techniques with crew proficiency checks and drills using safety sessions and fire critiques. In addition, practices methods of fire suppression in a safe efficient operation with the use of hand tools, equipment and vehicles used in fireline activities.    Ensures own and others welfare and safety in all aspects of assignments.
  • Communicates over a local radio network.
  • May be assigned to a fire lookout to provide detection and reporting of wildfires.  Reports smoke and fire to a dispatcher giving location, estimated size and other pertinent information.  Reports weather and fire behavior information keeping the dispatcher and/or fire officials informed of current conditions.
  • May be assigned to other management activities which may include but are not limited to cleaning outdoor recreation facilities; mowing grass and trimming shrubs; performing trail and building maintenance; completing resource management projects; removal and disposition of hazard trees; and like duties.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

The incumbent is involved with fuels and forestry management activities including; prescribed burning, mechanical fuel treatments, contract compliance, project monitoring, data collection and regen surveys under the supervision of a crew leader.

  • Monitoring fieldwork to accomplish fuels/forestry treatments that include thinning, slashing, pruning and piling.
  • Prepares prescribed burn units for ignition; this includes handline construction and removing fuels from the base of power poles, fence posts, and conifer trees.
  • Serves as a FFT2 on prescribed burn projects.
  • Maintains all prescribed fire equipment for daily and seasonal use.
  • Assists in gathering stand exam data, fuel line transects and fire regime condition classifications. 
  • Assists in field with flagging, tagging and general mapping of areas to be treated.
  • Traversing with GPS tools.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of standard fire program requirements, suppression tactics, methods, procedures and skills in the use of wildland firefighting hand tools, pumps and hoses, and chainsaws sufficient to perform routine fire suppression or prescribed fire assignments and to maintain firefighting tools and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of fire behavior, hazards and accepted fire safety practices and procedures to prevent injury and loss of life.
  • Ability to perform duties under stressful and adverse operating conditions, such as long work hours, heavy workloads, emergency situations, adverse working and environmental conditions.
  • Knowledge of agency and interagency qualification, position task book requirements and certification standards and procedures adopted by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a valid Washington state driver’s license and be Tribally insurable.
  • Must have attended and successfully completed Guard School.
  • Must obtain and maintain Red Card at a minimum FFT2
  • Must pass physical fitness test for arduous positions annually
  • Must complete and clear a Department of Interior Medical Exam
  • Annual refresher firefighter training class required
  • Ability to perform duties under stressful and adverse operating conditions, such as long work hours, heavy workloads, emergency situations, adverse working and environmental conditions.
