INTRODUCTION:

The goal of the Tribal Language/Culture program is to revitalize the language, culture and history of the Spokane Tribe. Our main goal is to ensure that the language and culture are being passed down from generation to generation. The Language/Culture Teacher Trainee will learn the Spokane Language and assist the efforts to revitalize the Spokane Language and Culture. 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn the Spokane Language /Culture in the Oral and written form           
  • Learn the language/ to teach in K-12, and if needed Adult language classes
  • Working with students Pre-K to adults as well as Tribal Elders                  
  • Assist in Curriculum Development
  • After completion of training the Trainee will be required to teach in a classroom(s) as assigned
  • After completion of training the Trainee  will commit to 3 years of teaching in the classroom(s)                                            

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED FOR POSITION:   

  • Complete a Course in Issues in Child Abuse and Neglect                                   
  • Course in classroom management and other training as required
  • Learn the Spokane Salish Language with the goal of becoming fluent
  • Language Training using materials provided

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a valid WA State Driver’s License, good driving record and be Tribally insurable
  • Must work towards fluency in the Spokane Language, including speaking, reading, analyzing and interpreting.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, will work respectfully with Elders and other
  • culturally knowledgeable people and students
  • Must be able to pass required federal and tribal background checks
  • Complete Classroom Management training, and other trainings as required

OTHER:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • If hired, will be required to apply for and receive a Tribal and First People’s Language,Culture and Oral Traditions Certification or endorsement
  • Will be required to take a course in Child Abuse and Neglect, and obtain the following;
    • CPR/First Aid
    • Food Handlers Card
